WE “UNDERSTAND”, WE JUST DON’T AGREE
By Heidi Harris

On November 2, gay activists were handed a major defeat when initiatives to prohibit gay marriages were successful in all eleven states in which they appeared. Matt Foreman, Executive Director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, lamented “it’s tough when the vast majority of citizens in your state not only do not understand you, but take hostile steps to change the Constitution to take away rights we never even had.”

PIT BULLS UNFAIRLY TARGETED
By Heidi Harris

Every other week it seems, we hear another report of a “pit bull” attacking someone. The immediate outcry is for the elimination of all “pit bulls”, and some jurisdictions have done just that. The problems with this policy are numerous.

First of all, the American Kennel Club does not recognize the “pit bull” as a breed. There are American Staffordshire Terriers, which resemble a “pit bull”, but they are not the same dog. There are also Bull Terriers, (think of General Patton’s famous dog) - still not “pit bulls”. There are other organization which do recognize “red nose pit bulls”, but the fact is, the breed standard varies, and many mixed breed dogs resemble the dreaded “pit bull”. CAUSE AND EFFECT
By Heidi Harris

“I’m familiar with the fact that you’re going to ignore this thing until it swims up and bites you in the ass. There are two ways you can solve his thing: you can kill it, or cut off its food supply…”

Shark Expert Matt Hooper to the Mayor of Amity, “Jaws” 1975

The residents of Amity Island weren’t the first people to ignore a disaster until it was too late. Although Matt Hooper (Actor Richard Dreyfus) was referring to a shark problem, insert the word “tax”, and his assessment would apply to Nevada and its voracious appetite for tax revenue.

THE KIDS ARE NOT ALRIGHT
By Heidi Harris

I have had two conversations in the last week with parents of young children who are separated or divorcing, and I’ve been disheartened with their lack of awareness of their kids’ pain. One father of two young children really surprised me. I’ve seen him with his kids, and I knew him prior to his marriage. His kids are adorable, and he has always seemed to be a devoted dad.

The reasons for his divorce are none of my business, but when the subject of his son came up (I hadn’t realized Mom had left town), he said, “well, I haven’t seen him in a couple of months, but when I saw him last, he was pretty tall”. I replied, “wow, that’s too bad”, to which he replied, “yeah, it’s all good”. Good for whom?
